How We Tailor a Portfolio for Each Client
How are you invested? Does your money manager preach set-it-and-forget-it strategies? Does he or she use your age as the primary driver for your investments? While this is relatively common, these kinds of strategies may not be personalized enough for you, which can lead to investment oversights and mistakes given your personal situation. In this video, Executive Vice President of Portfolio Management, Bill Glaser, discusses how Fisher Investments determines each clientโs portfolio strategy and all the factors that go into that decision.
Fisher Investments takes a comprehensive approach that considers each clientโs goals, investment time horizon, cash flow needs, tax considerations, outside assets, risk tolerance and more. Many money managers will simply create a portfolio based on one or two factors alone. However, focusing too heavily on just one aspect can lead to a portfolio that may not be tailored to your personal situation or ignores other important factors. Our rigorous and thorough approach creates what we think is an optimal portfolio for you given all the information we collect in our initial conversations. If anything changes in your situation over time, Fisher Investments can also make changes to your portfolio and investment strategy to make sure your portfolio is still appropriate and personalized for you.

Upbeat music plays.
A man dressed in a navy blue suit appears. A fly-out in the lower right corner identifies him as Bill Glaser, Executive Vice President, Portfolio Management.
The fly-out disappears. The camera remains focused on Bill Glaser, occasionally changing angle.
The music lowers in volume.
Bill Glaser: There's a number of contributing factors that go into determining a client's portfolio strategy. And we take a comprehensive approach that's really tailored to the needs of each individual client.
And we're looking at a whole host of things. Whether it's what are their investment objectives? Or, said differently, what are the goals for their assets? What's the time horizon for their assets? Meaning how long do they need their assets to work for them? What sort of restrictions might they want to place on the portfolio? Do they need to draw income or cash flows from the portfolio? Are their tax considerations? Do they have outside assets that are managed outside of our purview that we should be considering? And what are their risk tolerances?
So this approach differs from the competition in the sense that a lot of managers out there, they'll simply have you fill out a questionnaire, a risk tolerance matrix, or even take more of an age based approach in terms of trying to dictate what is the optimal asset allocation for any given client or strategy. But, that's not what we're doing at Fisher Investments. We are much more comprehensive in nature with a much more rigorous process that considers not only all of those factors, but many others.
