What Makes Fisher Investments Different? About Us

When Ken Fisher founded Fisher Investments in 1979, he envisioned building a better type of business. He wanted to educate investors on the things they need to know to become better-informed consumers.

Since early on, Ken has always been looking for ways to think differently about the investment environment. That included not just pioneering new capital markets ideas—such as the price-to-sales ratio—but also a unique business model and client service approach. As a fiduciary, Fisher Investments is legally obligated to put its client’s best interests first The key to a quality client-adviser relationship is trust, and Fisher Investments believes a business model that is aligned with its client's interest is the best way to build a long-lasting, relationship. To create client portfolios, Fisher Investments uses a top-down approach which emphasizes broader economic factors before selecting individual securities. The strategy determines the allocation and selection of assets based on macroeconomic characteristics and the expected impact on different areas of the market. Once the firm has identified the areas they think will perform well, they can select individual securities within those areas.

Nathan Fisher: When my father, Ken Fisher, founded Fisher Investments, he was on a mission. He envisioned building a better type of business, one that bettered the investment universe by educating investors on the things they needed to know to be more informed consumers.

Michael Hanson: Ken was looking for advantages and ways to think differently about how the investment environment worked, and he pioneered many things, including the Price-to-Sales ratio. He started to look at things like small cap value in the institutional world in ways that nobody had before. And that was how the firm really got its start. And, over time it's evolved to a very unique place, that now has a top-down philosophy and offers our customers services we never would have imagined going back so far.

Michael Hanson: Fisher Investments has really grown quite a lot over time. When I started at the firm, we were just about 150 employees and had about $10 billion under management. We're very proud to say now that we have well over 2500 employees and manage over $100 billion in assets.

And as well, we have an International Private Client Group that serves European high net worth investors. We have an Institutional business that serves institutions worldwide, as well as a 401(k) business.

Bill Glaser: We've structured our business such that we always want to place our clients’ interests before our own. And that fiduciary responsibility is one that we don't take lightly. We also believe in transparency, not only in terms of the fees that we charge, but also in terms of how we manage portfolios. We're very direct and proactive with our communications. We offer a very flexible, globally driven, top-down investment approach. And we provide, what I believe to be, a world class service organization. I think the service offering we have is really unparalleled in this industry.

Naj Srinivas: These are people who've worked their entire lives to amass a pool of money. And they're asking us to take this pool of money and then provide for them in retirement or otherwise, and help them live a more comfortable life. In my view, there's really no more noble profession than that—to be able to have a company that: values its clients first and foremost; puts their interests ahead of anything else; tries to do right by them always, and help them along the path to reaching their long-term goals and objectives. That's really what our mission is, in my view.
